This compelling period piece portrays Kahlens attempt to establish a settlement on the barren Jutland moors and his battle against the environment, bandits and a sadistic local official. A complex story, with rich portrayals that make the film really gripping. Fantastic wide-screen cinematography, witty and emotional, a near perfect cinematic experience, where nearly every frame is a work of art. Deeper and darker than director Arkels equally great film A Royal Affair, Mads Mikkelsens acting is superb, making this 2023s best film for many viewers.
