THE STATION CINEMA RESTORATION LEVY – WHAT IS IT AND WHY NOW?

The Station Cinema is based in one of the most unique venues of its kind in the UK, operating at The Station, a Grade II* listed building, in North Yorkshire. The historic nature of the building means there is a lot of ongoing maintenance and restoration work. With that comes a huge amount of responsibility. And expense. Everything we do has to be considered, investigated, planned, and signed off.

That’s why from the 31st March 2023, our tickets have included a small restoration levy. Put very simply, a restoration levy is an additional charge added to your ticket price which goes straight to RBPT, the charity behind The Station. Until 2023 we’ve always decided against adding this charge to your ticket price. You’ll often see a restoration levy on theatre tickets for the same purpose and most of our size, old and new (and much smaller) will likely add this or a similar charge.

Tickets are already a big investment, especially if you’re a regular cinemagoer, and in the current climate everyone is feeling the pinch. We get it.

So why then have we now added this charge to your ticket price? Firstly, we’ve kept it low – just £1.50 per ticket.

Before we get into the detail of why we’ve done this we’d like to first say, thank you. Adding a restoration levy is genuinely a game-changer for us and each £1.50 will stack up very quickly, enabling us to do so much. The Station is owned and operated by the registered charity, Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust (RBPT) – the same friendly faces who have operated The Station Cinema since early in 2022. They invest heavily back into The Station to ensure it is preserved for future generations and visiting The Station Cinema allows them to do this, and so much more including working to save other at-risk heritage buildings in the area. You can find out more here: www.rbptrust.co.uk.

Minor building repairs at The Station cost the charity upwards of £20,000 every year (before any unforeseen or urgent repairs) and that doesn’t include scheduled preservation and improvement works; which can amount to over £30,000 per year. With annual running costs for the building of over half a million pounds, we need your support. The levy predominantly goes towards maintaining this beautiful community building; ensuring we can complete essential works, continue to make improvements and focus on our goal of preservation for future generations. It may also be used to help save other at-risk heritage buildings in the area.

In short, coming to The Station Cinema supports a local charity – one that invests locally and works tirelessly to protect The Station’s future.

Thank you for your continued support. We couldn’t do it without you.
